Allucent, a contract research organization headquartered in Cary, named Paula Brown Stafford their new CEO. The move comes after Brown’s years-long run heading Novan in Durham. Former Allucent CEO Mark Goldberg will continue to serve as chairman, the company said, calling the leadership change a planned transition.

Brown was previously president of Quintiles (now Iqvia) and was Triangle Business Journal’s 2022 Women in Business Lifetime Achievement Award winner. She brings more than three decades of life sciences experience to Allucent and will guide the company’s next phase of growth.

According to Triangle Business Journal, Allucent has more than 100 employees in the region and more than 1,000 companywide.

Envu, headquartered in Cary, is poised to reach $900 million in revenue this year following a significant acquisition move. The company has agreed to purchase Global Specialty Solutions (GSS) from FMC Corporation for $350 million.

Envu CEO Gilles Galliou emphasized the strategic fit between Envu and GSS, noting shared goals, products, and markets. This acquisition is seen as a diversification strategy that enhances innovation and supply capabilities for Envu. Envu has grown to $850 million in revenue last year, with a target of $900 million for 2024. The company employs 900 people globally, including 200 in Cary.

Kellanova is launching a pioneering initiative in partnership with Ahold Delhaize USA to produce Cheez-It and Club crackers using regenerative wheat. These innovative products will be exclusively available at Ahold’s stores.

As part of this initiative, Kellanova and Ahold are collaborating with Bartlett, a grain agribusiness provider, to promote regenerative agricultural practices among wheat farmers in North Carolina. This regenerative wheat will be utilized alongside conventionally grown wheat in both cracker brands at Kellanova’s facility in Cary.

The pilot program aims to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions and is set to commence this summer, with products expected on Ahold Delhaize shelves next year. Initially, the focus will be on farmers who have already adopted regenerative agricultural methods, with plans to expand and educate more farmers in the future.

Allucent, a clinical research organization based in Cary, has been selected by the Rapid Response Partnership Vehicle (RRPV) to lead a decentralized clinical trial for the next generation of COVID-19 vaccines. The $25.5 million award will support a Phase IV clinical trial involving up to 4,000 participants. This trial aims to evaluate vaccine effectiveness across diverse geographic populations against SARS-CoV-2. Allucent plans to utilize a decentralized trial approach, where participants can stay at home and self-collect specimens using wearable devices. This initiative is part of Project NextGen, a $5 billion effort to advance the U.S. response to COVID-19 and enhance readiness for future public health challenges.

Hines, the developer behind Cary’s Fenton, is planning a massive makeover for Waverly Place. A popular outdoor shopping center in Cary, Waverly Place could be joining a growing list of malls across the Triangle that are being redeveloped.

The project would include up to 750 apartments, and an additional 30,000 square feet of commercial space. The redevelopment would largely focus on 7.74 acres of the 22.5-acre property at 2001 Kildaire Farm Road, including two parking lots and the CMX CinéBistro.

According to Hines’ managing director, Paul Zarian, “The prospect of continuing to invest in Cary was compelling.” He went on to describe the Fenton shopping center as a “core asset” surrounded by “excellent demographics.”

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is adding to the Triangle’s international reach with new Copa Airlines and Lufthansa flights. The flights connect the Triangle to thriving international cities, with Copa Airlines’ flight from Panama City, Panama, and Lufthansa’s flight to Frankfurt, Germany.

These new flights have come after @flyrdu announced it set a new monthly record for passenger traffic in May. The airport saw 1.4 million passengers pass through its terminals, 10.5 percent above April’s traffic numbers and 9.7 percent above last May’s metrics. Last year, RDU added four new airlines, 25 new destinations and 49 new additional routes and were the fastest growing airport in the top 50 airports in the United States with a 22% increase in passenger traffic over 2022.

The Rogers Restaurant and Motel was a hallmark of the Cary community since the late ‘60s. After owning and operating the building for over 30 years, Billy and Barbara Rogers retired and closed the business in 1991, leaving it vacant. Today, the space is being revived back to its community-focused roots and is allowing work spaces, retail shops, restaurants and small businesses to thrive. Read the full story via @newsobserver

There is tons of economic activity always happening in Cary. Recently, longtime Cary shopping center MacGregor Village sold for $30 million. It consists of six buildings and 138,276 square feet of space, according to property records.

“The first time I came to Cary 20-plus years ago, it was the first shopping center that I visited, so it has some personal meaning to me, and I just think it’s got a lot of potential down the road.”
